Cat 255 compact track loader on a Northeast Ohio job

About

One crew. The iron that lives here.

Clegg & Sons, LLC. Veteran-owned. Home base is Canfield / Greenford. We walk the lot, lock the scope, and show up with the machine that matches the work.

The outfit

Clegg & Sons, LLC

Forestry mulching, brush cutting, firewood, and limestone driveways in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana. A one-crew operation — the owner is on the machine with the goal of being able to hand the company over to his 4 sons when they are ready.

Iron

What we bring

  • Cat 255 XPS

The daily driver. Bucket work, spreading stone, and the platform for the BRX318.

  • Cat BRX318

72-inch industrial brush cutter. Light to moderate brush — not a lawn deck.

  • TYM 5520CH

Compact tractor. Loader, backhoe, grapple, and flail mowing when the 255 is the wrong size.

  • Toro Dingo TX1000W Turbo

Walk-behind compact track loader. Tight access, auger work, and light site work the 255 cannot squeeze into.

  • Harley rake

Overgrown or rutted gravel on the Cat 255 — $1,100 first hour, $150/hr after.

  • Rental mulcher

Forestry mulching on rented iron, sized to the stems, the slope, and the access. Not always the same machine.

  • Eastonmade 22-28 + RCS28 Pro

Owned mobile outfit. Your logs from $150/cord, or a one-trip package from $650.

  • Firewood processor

Firewood processor rental for bigger piles, or whole logs that still need a saw. We bring it to the site. Fresh logs: we coordinate delivery through multiple logging companies — clean wood, logger’s rate, quoted before the truck rolls. Custom pricing on the rental.

Questions

Is the estimator a bid?
No. Mixed, heavy, and clear-cut jobs are a range from typical Northeast Ohio work of this kind. Light brush is hourly — $350 to show up for the first hour, $150 an hour after that — and the estimator turns that into a single number from an hours guess. Terrain, buried junk, wet ground, and access can still move it. We walk the property and lock the hours before anything is billed.
Do you haul brush off the property?
Brush cutting with the Cat BRX318 knocks standing cover down and leaves coarse chips. Forestry mulching is a heavier reduction to a chip carpet, done with a rented mulcher we size to the stems and the access. Hauling, log decks, or grinding stumps below grade is extra.
What size wood do you cut?
Split to about 16 inches and sold by the full cord (4×4×8). Seasoned mix and oak are temporarily unavailable. Cherry smoking wood is $10 a bundle or $175 a 1/3 cord. Pine campfire wood is $200 a cord. Cords dump free within 10 miles of Greenford, $50 a load past that. Cherry bundles dump only after 10 bundles — same 10-mile / $50 rule then. Fewer than 10 bundles is pickup at Lisbon Rd / Canfield. If the wood is already yours, that is processing — not a cord of our firewood. Staged at the machine is $150 a cord. Scattered / long carry is $175. Any process call is $450 minimum. Or book a one-trip package sized to the cords: half day $650 (up to 3 cords + 10 chains), full day $1,350 (8 cords + 20 chains), crew day $1,650 (10 cords + 30 chains). Extra cords that day $150. If the wood is scattered in multiple locations, add $100 for a half day, $200 for a full day, or $300 for a crew day. Extra chains $8 off the bar, $15 still on it — chains do not bump the day. Clock instead of cords is $175/hr. Bigger piles use a firewood processor rental brought to the site. Fresh logs: we coordinate delivery through multiple logging companies — clean, fresh quality wood, billed at the logger’s rate, quoted before the truck rolls. Custom pricing on the rental.
Do you sharpen chains?
Yes. Off-bar is cheaper. Drop-off at Lisbon Rd / Canfield is $8 if you take it off, $15 if it is still on the saw — I pull it, sharpen, put it back. If I come to you just to sharpen, that is a $175 trip plus $10 a chain already off the saw, or $15 still on the bar. On a process or package day extra chains are $8 off the bar, $15 still on it.
Do you offer yard pickup?
Not on cords. Cherry bundles under 10 are pickup at Lisbon Rd / Canfield. Dump on bundles starts at 10. Cords are dumped at your place.
What does delivery cost?
Dumped within 10 miles of Greenford with no delivery fee. Past 10 miles it is $50 a load. The truck holds one cord, so two cords is two trips. Cherry bundles dump only after you buy 10 — then the same 10-mile / $50 rule. Under 10 bundles is pickup at Lisbon Rd / Canfield.
What stone do you use on driveways?
East Fairfield (EFCC FAMILY) limestone from Honey Creek and Sub in Petersburg. A new lane defaults to a suggested mix — AASHTO #1 base under an ODOT 304 cap. Straight 304 is $18 a ton at the quarry. ODOT 617 is the same money, finer. AASHTO #1 is $23.75. Washed #57 is $25. Washed #8 is $27. That is the February 1, 2026 quarry list — delivery to the lane is assessed later, and we confirm the sheet before we order. If the stone is already on the lane and you just need ruts and weeds pulled, that is Harley raking — $1,100 first hour, $150 after.
What is Harley raking?
A power rake on the Cat 255 that recrowns existing gravel — ruts, weeds, high spots — without ordering a new load. $1,100 first hour, $150 an hour after. We estimate hours from the length of the lane and lock a number. New stone is a refresh or a new install, not this pass.
How far do you travel?
Canfield / Greenford is home base. The core is Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana — the towns on About. We will travel outside that list. Alliance, Parkman, and similar jumps are fine — we just price the mobilize honestly.
What is the difference between brush cutting and mulching?
Brush cutting is the faster pass on our Cat 255 with a Cat BRX318 — grass, briar, and saplings, coarse cut vegetation, not a finished floor. Forestry mulching is a heavier reduction to a chip carpet you can walk, done with a rented mulcher we size to the stems, the slope, and the access. Not the same machine every time. Clear cutting is different again — standing trees come down with a saw and the Cat 255, then we deck the logs. Stumps stay unless we quote grinding.
Do I need a permit?
The property owner is responsible for permits and HOA rules. Most rural brush cutting does not need one. If we see a wetland flag, a township issue, or a utility, we stop and say so.
